Mamiya Rinzō (間宮 林蔵), a samurai of the Edo period, was sent to map Sakhalin, an island off the coast of Northeast Asia, in the early years of the 19th century. This story is about exploration, cultural conflict, map-making, and how cartography is related to politics. It is also an anthropological look at the Ainu and Nivkh, the indigenous peoples of Sakhalin.
The animals and the landscape of the island and its surrounding waters are beautifully illustrated, making this a visually appealing manga that explores a little-known aspect of Japanese history and culture. The issues the book covers are still relevant today: the ownership of Sakhalin has been in dispute since the end of World War 2, but also the treatment of the indigenous peoples has been called into question.
